If you’ve been to a garage or psych-rock show around Boston or Cambridge over the past few years, you’ve likely seen Peter Colpack. Usually positioned just to the left or right of the front of the stage, Colpack leads his Lysergic Factory Light Show with two distinct rituals: Providing “live” psychedelic visuals as the backdrops for live performances, and pausing every now and again to freak the fuck out with arms and head flailing around as his feet remain fastened to the ground.
Dude is usually on some other shit entirely, but today, he’s on a different kind of quest. Colpack — or “Petey,” as he’s known — stars in the new video from Boston fuzz-punks Midriffs, and endures a bloody quest to get to “Death Beach”.
Directed by TJ Freda & Fay Hsieh-Lewis, “Death Beach” is a tale of undead freak-outs set against Midriffs shake-and-quake brand of agitated surf-punk.
“The video was a really cool experience to get our ideas out and make something funny that worked well the way the song went,” says TJ Freda. “Local favorite Peter Colpack stars as the main character. My 15-year-old brother did all the FX make up for it. He did a really good job.”
Freda adds: “It’s really cool to be able to work in other medias that go along with our music. We all work in different medias other than music. I do a lot of graphic design and film/video, Sam [Aprea], who did the animation in the video, is a really talented animator and drawer. And you have probably seen our bassist’s stickers around the city; Felix Sticker is his street art project, and is a really great illustrator. And we all paint a lot.”
It all adds up to one awesome video, which we are stoked to premiere today on Vanyaland. Catch Midriffs this Saturday when they play Day/Night 3 of the 2015 Boston Fuzzstival alongside Drug Rug, Quilt, CREATUROS, Doug Tuttle, Vundabar, the TeleVibes, and about a dozen others. After the Fuzzfest, they hit the road for a tour with fellow House of the Rising Fuzz band Dinoczar for a string of shows later this month.
