Another day, another weird-ass Nirvana-related headline none of us ever thought we’d write. Today’s installment comes via a newly unearthed cover of the Beatles’ 1964 hit “And I Love Her”, performed by the late Kurt Cobain.
It’s the latest offering in a series of eye-opening treats from upcoming documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, in which director Brett Morgen was given unparalleled access to the musician’s life, including hundreds of hours of “lost” Cobain audiotapes. The Beatles cover, which you can listen to below, will be included in the film’s score.
“Nobody in Kurt’s life — not his management, wife, bandmates — had ever heard his Beatles thing,” Morgen tells Rolling Stone. “I found it on a random tape.”
Some fans are saying that this isn’t exactly a “new” find, and that the demo has floated around since the early ’90s, but it likely escaped the ears of most people in the roughly 25 years that have passed since it was recorded.
After premiering at Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews, Montage of Heck will air on HBO May 4, with a limited theatrical release beginning next Friday.
