You can turn the music off, but you can’t un-hear what Suriel describes in his new song “Runaway.”
“Riding through the city / Saw a body on the sidewalk / Felt my stomach drop / I start to wonder what he died for,” the Lynn rapper recalls on his new single, which arrived late last month (September 24).
The collaboration with Boston’s Amandi Music is a grating contrast of pain and perseverance, as Suriel describes a present that’s “starting to feel like we’re in hell” and a brighter future that he refuses to lose sight of. “Runaway” deepens his knack for dogged lyricism; plenty of tracks vaguely brag about tenacity, but few are this explicit in their execution. The single presents a delicate balancing act from Suriel, who peels back the realities of his environment — like poverty and violence — but doesn’t let those factors outweigh his optimism.
“I got bigger dreams / Cuz I see past these limitations,” he raps with assurance.
