Editor’s Note: It’s equal parts exciting and terrifying to see the calendar flip to October in New England, and not just because it means the Red Sox aren’t contending or that Jeremy Swayman still isn’t signed. To help soothe all the seasonal panic that comes with preparing for two weeks of pretty landscapes and then months of snowfall that seems to linger until “Smarch,” the one constant throughout all the seasons is comedy, and that is one thing that keeps on flowing like the finest PSL on tap. With homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlighting the calendar, the plethora of powerful comedy throughout the commonwealth continues to show up, night after night. To help you make sense of all of the wonderful options, enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below, find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (October 6).
Comedy Night @ Nash Bar
The best comedy is, of course, good comedy. But the second best comedy, arguably, is free comedy. The South Shore Boyz have promised both on a weekly basis as they put together a rootin’ tootin’ lineup of some of the best comedy voices that the city and region have to offer, so saddle up and head on over to one of the newest shows in town for a fun, ad quite affordable Tuesday night.
NASH BAR COMEDY :: Tuesday, October 1 at Nash Bar, 253 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 7:30 p.m., 21+, Free :: Reserve tickets
Chris Gethard & Eddie Pepitone at Crystal Ballroom
Sweet and bitter rarely mix well, but if there’s one place where it immediately works best, at least in the case of the thoughtful, introspective comedy of Chris Gethard and the boisterous, chaotic stylings of Eddie Pepitone, it’s Massachusetts. Getting two top-tier comics on the same night on a Tuesday in October is not a common sight to see, but we’re here for it, and we’re ready to get pissed off a little.
CHRIS GETHARD & EDDIE PEPITONE :: Wednesday, October 2 at Crystal Ballroom, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA : 7 p.m., 18-plus, $26 advance and $30 at doors :: Advance tickets
Kill Tiny at Midway Café
There’s always something that makes Tiny’s monthly gathering special, and this time, it’s not one, but two birthday celebrations that make it a little bit sweeter. Come and check out another dynamite lineup hosted by the birthday boy himself, and rounded out by Holly Johnson, Thom Crowley, Ms. Adventure, Rob Crean, and the other half of the birthday tandem, Gary James.
KILL TINY :: Friday, October 4 at Midway Café, 3496 Washington St. in Jamaica Plain, MA :: 9 p.m., 21-plus, $10 :: Advance Tickets
Sebastian Maniscalco at TD Garden
Bringing folks to an arena for a comedy show is one thing, but if there’s one person who can do it two nights in a row without missing a step, it’s Sebastian Maniscalco. The high-energy comedy vet only continues to bring bigger shows to the city with every visit, and this time around May just be the biggest one yet as he approaches a double sell-out weekend. Chances are that Chicago wouldn’t let it happen, but it’s starting to feel like Boston is Maniscalco’s true comedy home.
SEBASTIAN MANISCALCO :: Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5 at TD Garden, 100 Legends Way in Boston, MA :: Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., $59 and up :: Advance Tickets
