There’s no greater joy than hearing a song knowing it’ll stick with us for a while, and that’s the feeling we have this morning as The Cure returns to our hearts, minds, and playlists with stirring new single “Alone.” The gorgeous new track, which hits the streams today (September 26), begins a new era for Robert Smith and the gang, and its our first spiritual listening experience for forthcoming album Songs of a Lost World, out November 1.

Songs of a Lost World is The Cure’s 14 studio album, and the icons’ first in 16 years.

“Alone” sets a complex and engaging tone, and the track was often the opening effort across The Cure’s recent 90-date, 33-country Shows Of A Lost World Tour. It feels like an integral part of the new record, serving as its lead invitation, and Smith confirms that sentiment.

“It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus,” Smith says. “I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be… as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem Dregs by the English poet Ernest Dowson… and that was the moment when I knew the song — and the album — were real.”
