Via The Wilbur

Editor’s NoteAs the dogs days of summer get further away in the rearview, and the crisp, creeping wind of fall sneaks in overnight, it’s time to start thinking about bringing things back indoors to stay warm and entertained to stave off the insanity of the upcoming darker, colder months in New England. That’s where comedy can help you out, and boy oh boy, do we have a ton of it coming through town every week. With homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlighting the calendar, the plethora of powerful comedy throughout the commonwealth continues to show up, night after night. To help you make sense of all of the wonderful options, enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below, find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (September 22).

Charlie Berens at The Wilbur

There’s nothing like a little Midwest attitude to help usher in the cooler northeast months, and Charlie Berens has plenty of it. It’s been awhile since Berens last made his way to Boston, so there’s sure to be a lot to catch h up on as he keeps his Good Old Fashioned tour rolling.

CHARLIE BERENS :: Friday, September 20 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 6:30 p.m., $29 to $39 :: Advance tickets

Brian Posehn at Crystal Ballroom

It’s never a dull time when good ol’ Nick pays a visit, and as one of the best joke writers on the grind today, it’s about to be Posehn in the membrane in Somerville. Never one to keep the gritty details of any subject to himself, Brian Posehn continues to redefine what it means to be at the top of your game, and this new hour should be exception.

BRIAN POSEHN :: Friday, September 20 at Crystal Ballroom, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA : 6:30 p.m., all ages, $34 :: Advance tickets

Jay Mohr at Laugh Boston

We won’t hold it against him that he’s deeply connected to Los Angeles Lakers royalty, because Jay Mohr is still just that good at what he does. Although he hasn’t been rather loud in the realm of releases and recorded material these last few years, Mohr only continues to cement his place as a legend amidst comedy club crowds everywhere with his unshakable brand of hilarity and relatability.

JAY MOHR :: Friday, September 20 to Saturday, September 21 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: 7 & 10 p.m. both nights, $33 :: Advance tickets

Doug Key at Breathe Cambridge

From start to finish, this show may just be one of the most potent showcases of local talent that you’ll see all year. While Ryan Ellington hosts, and Doug Key headlines with his wide-ranging comedy approach, the supporting cast of the evening is no joke, as Logan O’Brien, Cher Lynn and Brieana Woodward fill out a fight card that pulls no punches and delivers a haymaker of a Saturday night.

DOUG KEY :: Saturday, September 21 at Breathe Cambridge, 30 John F. Kennedy St., 2nd Floor in Cambridge, MA :: 8 p.m., $20 :: Advance tickets
