Overrider take glitch-rock flight on the unapologetic ‘black wings’

English anonymous group Overrider have been non-stop since they first hit the scene in 2020. The self-described “shoegaze x breakcore” collective out of Manchester have shared steady singles alongside “update” releases, most recently this week’s reworking of their debut EP cyc|er. In their latest offering, Overrider expanded their discography on Tuesday (August 20) with the unapologetically all-cylinders track “black wings.”

“black wings” wastes no time setting the tone: A revving motor engine leads into a sampled voice asserting “I could give a fuck about your warrant.” From there it kicks into gear, offering a refreshingly rough-hewn guitar track washed in techno tones. Informed by equal parts early-aughts rock and contemporary hyper-pop sensibilities, “black wings” comfortably toes the line between influences, building a solid space in-between where Overrider shine. Each element in the track gets to breathe and expand over the course of four minutes, resulting in a sound that, really, is just badass.

Overrider says “black wings” is “absolutely one of those cases where ‘more is more’.”

“We’ve done some rock stuff in the past, like ‘Ansible’ on the first EP, but nothing that’s as completely unapologetic as this,” they add. “More than anything else we wanted to see if it was even possible to make a punchy rock track when you’re as janky and glitchy as we are.”

Check it out.
