Apparently, according to the eggheads at various big-brained publications, college-aged Zoomers don’t like fuckin’ in their movies. There’s a lot of reasons for this — our culture is immersed in sex, yet carries the stench of puritanism around the subject (which is bad), we’re a lot more cognizant of sexual trauma (which is good), porn has become so freely available that there’s no real reason to go to the theater to see a sex comedy when you can find something that’s been keyworded to match your specific tastes and/or fetishes, and we’re just generally kind of uncomfortable with the whole thing.
But a big part of it is that it’s been hustled out of the multiplex, for better or for worse. It’s also that we just don’t have a ton of movies for adults anymore, which means that adult subjects like sexuality are kind of off the table when you’re in a family-tentpole-centric marketplace. This is why, even if the movie sucks, we respect the hell out of Ti West’s MaXXXine, which will be taking over IMAX screens next month for some porno-horror havoc, and it means somebody, somewhere, besides us, has faith in our college-aged young adults.

MaXXXine hits theaters on July 5, but if you want an early look at the film that you don’t have to stream on your phone on data while hiding in the bathroom at work, you can watch a special teaser that will play before the one-night-only re-release of X, the first film in West’s trilogy, on June 18. Just remember not to sit in the splash zone.
