We know there’s plenty of jokes that we could make about Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the fourth installment of a franchise that’s now old enough to suffer through a middle-management role in Schenectady, but honestly, we’re kind of stoked to see Eddie Murphy back in one of the biggest roles in his career. Even better, we’re more excited for all of the potential legacyquels that could be lined up if this is a big hit. How about The Final 48 Hours, where Nick Nolte somehow is coaxed into sharing screentime with Eddie again? Or A Vampire in Bushwick, where Eddie’s vamp has to contend with the crowds at Saint Vitus? The Golden Man, where the Golden Child is now a full-grown adult with a family. Harlem Nights, meet Harlem Days, where the next generation of comics will share screen time with the legends in a big ol’ period piece (actually, this one isn’t a terrible idea). The films write themselves, folks.
Anyhow, Netflix has realized that they’ve got what might be a bona fide summer hit on their hands, and have ramped up marketing just in time for the first truly hot days in New England by dropping a trailer for Mark Molloy’s sequel. Get ready for Eddie, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton to take you straight back to the ’80s come July.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis:
“Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.”
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F hits Netflix on July 3. What a way to ring in Independence Day weekend, huh?
