Nothing unearths a craving for brooding post-punk — in the middle of an otherwise beaming spring, no less — like the pall of a solar eclipse. Just days after the celestial phenomenon, Dark Spring Boston continues the awe-inspiring gloom with an evening of darkwave, post-punk, goth, and adjacent genres in Cambridge this weekend.
As opposed to past renditions of the fest, which has spanned multiple venues and evenings, this year’s festivities will take place solely at Sonia on Saturday (April 13). Korine (pictured above), Widow Rings, Hemlock for Socrates, Midnight Psychic, and DJs Dragnet and Miss Hell are scheduled to perform, as well as a trio of Boston acts: Perennial post-punk group House of Harm, spellbinding singer-songwriter Allie Frost, and dream-pop act The Spearmint Sea, featuring Dark Spring organizer Nichole Ferree.
Despite the festival’s smaller footprint this spring, a post on Dark Spring’s Facebook page labelled it their “biggest show ever,” and it’s easy to see why from the top-billed acts alone. Korine — consistently a Vanyaland favorite — recently released a moody collection of remixes (which includes reworkings by artists like Nuovo Testamento and Small Black), while House of Harm are in the midst of level-up themselves, unveiling a European tour in tangent with their new video “Soaked in Pastel.”
