Scout and Phoebe Green foster an alt-pop connection of trust with ‘Who’

We have a confession to make: Last fall, Hamburg-born, Sweden-raised, and now London-based artist Scout dropped a new track called “Who,” and — for reasons unknown — we totally slept on it. But a second chance arrived this past Friday (January 12), as Scout rebooted the effervescent alt-pop track with an assist from Manchester indie-pop artist Phoebe Green. With the new-ish tune comes word of Scout’s forthcoming debut Everything Will Make Sense, which hits March 1 via Sweat Entertainment.

But for the moment we’re just reveling in this chilled-out, sun-soaked electronic track, which despite its relatively upbeat demeanor relays a lyrical theme of relaying feelings of frustration and confusion in the music industry, and was penned as a reminder to respect and trust one’s own self. And that makes the pairing of Scout and Green all the more appropriate, creating something in “Who” that gives us the same feeling of listening to Shura’s early synth-pop work nearly a decade ago.

“Phoebe is someone I’ve looked up to a lot as an artist and a songwriter for a while so finding out she was down for a collab was so cool, especially with ‘Who’ being my second ever release,” says Scout. “Things fell into place really easily once that initial connection was made and I wanted to let Phoebe do her thing. She came to the studio with this beautiful idea for a second verse and I was like ‘that’s it, don’t change a thing’.”

Scout continues: “We realized our voices blend eerily well too, that’s both of our vocals in the pre-chorus and the chorus but it sounds like one which is kinda symbolic for the whole process and song. Working with someone like Phoebe is really effortless in way because one, she’s super talented, but also I think because there’s a level of unspoken understanding of each other’s experience as young women in the industry which the song touches upon.”
