For many of us, the most freeing moment of our lives is when we finally stop keeping score of all the missteps and mistakes we make as we travel through each day, accepting the highs and lows as part of the routine and ultimately hoping to just come out ever-so-slightly on the plus side. Self-acceptance and the path to it takes many forms and avenues, and right now ours is soundtracked by Soda Blonde’s vibrant new single “Bad Machine,” which hits YouTube today (August 2) via a fun video soaked in human destruction directed and edited by the band’s guitarist Adam O’Regan.

“For this video we wanted to explore the idea of ‘malfunction’,” O’Regan says. “In an age of increasing automation, artificial intelligence etc., it’s easy to imagine the many ways things could go awry. But also, we just wanted to break stuff! Our talented & hardworking production designers built the set in 2 days, and we destroyed it in 10 mins of 16mm film.”

That’s the human spirit. The yearning “Bad Machine” is the first taste of the Irish band’s forthcoming album Dream Big, out September 8. Its lush synth and warm pop sensibilities confronting the face of our collective societal angst positions it as one of the more exciting album releases of the fall calendar.

“We can be slaves to our own impulses,” adds O’Regan. “This idea that ‘every part of me is a bad machine breaking everything all the time, every part of me has been wired to repeat, I’ve got a bad desire by design,’ it’s this idea of recognizing that this is just a part of who you are and going with that; but it’s a double-edged sword.”
