Zendaya serves love-love in the ‘Challengers’ trailer

Challengers
MGM

Now that the MCU Spider-Man movies are on hold, Dune Part II has wrapped, and Sam Levinson has moved on to perpetually reshooting HBO’s The Idol, it seems Zendaya might actually have some free time. Well, more free time than she previously had, given that she seems to be one of the world’s busiest people. This means we get the opportunity to see her do more wonderfully weird shit, like star in our fave Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, a rom-com sports sex comedy that looks about as delightfully bizarre as you might imagine. Coming from the one-two punch of the Suspiria remake and Bones and All, it’s kinda cool to see Luca “relaxing” with a film that’s just a little bit lighter in tone, as shown in this pretty funny trailer that MGM dropped on Tuesday. Who knows, this thing will probably get all fucked up in the third act, but we’re hopeful!

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis, which thankfully doesn’t require you to know anything about tennis in order to really understand it (though you might just want to watch King Richard again, if for no other reason than to witness the last moments of Will Smith, movie star):

“Tashi, a tennis player turned coach, has transformed her husband from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a challenger event — close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour. Tensions soon run high when he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick, his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.”

Challengers hits theaters on August 11. Who knows, maybe we’ll watch the U.S. Open this year? We can’t imagine Chris Fowler and the ESPN commentating crew plugging this one, as funny as that might be.
