Just when we need it most, Slowdive are here to put our modern mood to music. The British band returns today (June 20) with a trifecta of news: A new album titled everything is alive, due September 1 via Dead Oceans; a lush new dream-pop single called “kisses”; and word of an extensive tour that includes a North American swing in the fall.

The new album is Slowdive’s fifth, and first since 2017’s self-titled comeback record, which arrived 22 years after its predecessor. everything is alive is dedicated to Rachel Goswell’s mother and Simon Scott’s father, who both passed away in 2020, and is said to explore themes of life and hope against a backdrop of darker times.

“There were some profound shifts for some of us personally,” says vocalist and guitarist Rachel Goswell. “Those crossroads are reflected in the many-layered emotional tenor of Slowdive’s music; everything is alive is heavy with experience, but each note is poised, wise, and necessarily pitched to hope. Its unique alchemy subtly embodies both sadness and gratitude, groundedness and uplift.”

Guitarist and vocalist Neil Halstead sums it up: “It wouldn’t feel right to make a really dark record right now. The album is quite eclectic emotionally, but it does feel hopeful.”

Get lost in the expected depth of “kisses” below, and scan through the bouquet of Slowdive’s North American dates, which includes a September 25 appearance at Citizens House of Blues Boston. Tickets to all shows go on sale Friday (June 23).
