Latrell James’ reputation as one of Boston’s premier rapper-producers has become so ingrained in our minds that it’s a true treat to hear him hop aboard a beat from another coast. James shifts into the lyrical lane for “Dayez,” the fluid new single from producer and instrumentalist Ian Ewing, released today (June 16). The track from Ewing’s forthcoming album Where I’ll Be finds the prolific rapper square between a California-crafted melody and breezy choruses from London vocalist Shaqdi.
From his middle ground, James lets his quick-witted versus dominate “Dayez” — but not before shouting out the home team. “You playing Jayson Tatum / You balling within your bubble,” he raps, nodding to the Celtics player and NBA standout.
Hey, you can take the beat out of Boston, but not the bars. Tune in below, and catch James headlining Woburn’s Juneteenth Music Festival this Saturday (June 17).
