Here’s a coincidence that’s twistin’ our melons, man — on the same week where UFO whistleblowers began fueling rumors of confirmed alien intelligence, a new cosmic supergroup led by Happy Mondays’ sonic space travelers Shaun Ryder and Bez crash lands on Earth. They’re called Mantra of the Cosmos, they’re joined by two fellas who’ve done time in Oasis, The Who’s Zak Starkey and Andy Bell of RIDE, and they dropped a debut single yesterday (June 6) via BMG that’s a hypnotic n’ hectic aural trip called “Gorilla Guerilla.”
Yeah, check the spelling, check ya’ head, then step on to the psychedelic dance floor with this jolting sonic bit of awesome ridiculousness. On Mantra of the Cosmos, Ryder handles vocals, Bez dances with percussion, Starkey mans the drums, and Bell holds down the bass. And each of the dudes have somethin’ to fookin’ say about it.
Says Ryder: “It’s a fucking blast mate.”
Says Bez: “I always knew the best was yet to come.”
Says Starkey: “[It’s a] fantastic psychedelic groove, from a band of misfits outsiders and innovators.”
Says Bell: “It’s a pleasure to be part of Mantra of the Cosmos. Four like-minded souls who get off on the same music.”
Mantra of The Cosmos was conceived by Starkey; is co-produced by he and his wife Sharna “Sshh” Starkey; and is described like this: “This newly assembled group are here to shake up the foundations of modern pop music; a dubby, electronic, 21st-Century Hawkwind of a band destined to be experienced through epic live performances.”
Beam us the fuck up.
