The Maddocks greet us with ‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’

We’re as easy as a morning piss on the weekend, so when we see things like “Manchester” and “post-punk” pop up in our email inbox, it quickly grabs our attention. But a tune has to be solid to hold it — our attention, that is — and the latest tune to flex our senses and shift our moods to something unexpectedly joyous comes from The Maddocks.

The English quartet — vocalist and guitarist George Edwards; bassist Siobhán Lally; rhythm guitarist Alex Tollerfield; and drummer Ed Gibbins — formed just last year after first meeting in school a decade earlier, and all claim they were born in the same Stockport hospital at the turn of the millennium. Today (January 20), the band delivers the first taste of their spiky aural cocktail with debut single “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things”.

The Maddocks break it all down for us: “‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’ is probably the epitome of what The Maddocks represents. We’re always getting ourselves into mad situations and laughing about daft stuff, and that’s basically where the song name came from. George spilled a Pot Noodle on the floor during our second ever rehearsal, causing Toller to sigh in exasperation and utter the words ‘this is why we can’t have nice things’ — we were in the process of writing the song and the phrase just stuck!”

We’re excited to await a plaque on the wall outside that rehearsal space in 25 years. In the meantime, rip it up and start again with “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” below.
