V3 Weekend: Kurt Vile, Michelle Wolf, Halloween Horror Marathon

Via Coolidge Corner Theatre

Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of MusicComedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.

MusicKurt Vile at Royale

Yeah, sure, Halloween cover shows are cool (*not as cool as when the pill was throwing them), but have you ever chilled with Kurt Vile on Halloween Eve? That’s how we’re rolling this weekend, as a healthy slate of live music options featuring OGs and dress-up is capped by Kurt Vile and The Violators holding court Sunday night (October 30) at Royale in the Theatre District. The outside streets should be a magnificent shit show, but inside the Tremont Street venue should be chill as hell, as Vile brings his spring album Watch My Moves and a whole lot of psychedelic folk vibes to Boston. Local alt-rock luminaries Come are on board as the opener, so the entire evening should be a mood. There’s probably a Kurt Vile + Come cover show happening somewhere in Somerville this weekend, so we might as well just catch the real thing.

KIRT VILE AND THE VIOLATORS + COME :: Sunday, October 30 at Royale, 279 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., 18-plus, $29.75 :: Bowery event page :: Advance tickets

Comedy: Michelle Wolf at The Wilbur

Halloween is for werewolves, and the weekend before it is for just Wolf — Michelle Wolf, that is, who brings her laugh arsenal to The Wilbur Theatre on Saturday (October 29). Jason Greenough delivered the pitch earlier in the week via Mic’d Up: Not bringing the good stuff is just not an option for Michelle Wolf, and we are so goddamn happy to have her brilliantly crafted tactical breakdowns of social issues, pop culture and society back in town. Never one to shy away from saying what some might think should not be said, Wolf has worked her magic all the way to the upper crust of the comedy game, and she’s only continuing to play a winning hand, hour after hour.

MICHELLE WOLF :: Saturday, October 29 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., $35 to $55 :: Wilbur event page :: Advance tickets

Film/TV: 21st Halloween Horror Marathon at The Coolidge

OK, yeah, we’ve been hyping a lot of Coolidge Corner Theatre screenings lately, including last week’s foray back to Medfield State Hospital, but the Brookline movie house just owns this season. And this weekend they revisit one of the bloodiest crown jewels on their calendar: The annual Halloween Horror Marathon, a 13-hour overnighter that embodies everything about the greatest holiday. This year’s 21st edition, starting Saturday (October 29) at 11:59 p.m., features 1927 classic London After Midnight kicking things off with a live score from pianist Jeff Rapsis. From there we’ll see 1931 epic Dracula, 1985’s Fright Night, and… well, you have to attend to find out. “The remaining films will stay in their coffins until they hit the screen,” declares the Coolidge, “with plenty of ghastly thrills and supernatural surprises along the way!”

21st ANNUAL HALLOWEEN HORROR MARATHON :: Saturday, October 29 at The Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St. in Brookline MA :: 11:59 p.m., $45 :: Event page and advance tickets
