The wonderful and resplendent Johnny Marr is currently on tour opening up for The Killers, and we’ve been treated to a few special surprises so far, including a some content-worthy renditions of classics from Marr’s former band The Smiths. Over the weekend (October 1) at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Marr upped the ante by welcoming Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke to the stage to perform The Queen Is Dead classic “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” People were into it.
Marr welcomed Rourke to the stage by describing his former bandmate as “my best pal in the world.” After Rourke showed off that timeless bassline, sounding as crisp as it first did 36 years ago and weaved perfectly with Marr’s timeless guitar work, Marr closed the six-minute-long performance by noting “that’s a good one.”

Meantime, The Killers tour with Marr rolls into TD Garden tonight. The Smiths’ infamous vocalist Morrissey, as expected, is nowhere near these spontaneous mini-reunions, but he brings his own solo tour to MGM Music Hall at Fenway on December 4.
