Remember that time back in April your friend told you to go to Brighton Music Hall to catch Em Beihold? Nope, we don’t either, which tells us we need some new friends. Last Friday, the Los Angeles alt-pop artist dropped her new EP, Egg in the Backseat, and now we’re lamenting not hitting up the Allston club to catch her in such an intimate venue. Because with a forthcoming fall tour with King Princess, this kaleidoscopic new EP, and an unfuckwithable arsenal of hits that feels like it can be not just be the sound of this summer, but the sound of any summer, Beihold feels like 2022’s true breakout performer.

We got hooked instantly by the title track, which falls somewhere between Sara Bareilles and Tove Lo before a hypnotic low-end undertow pulls us deep into Beihold’s colorful pop orbit. Other standouts like “Goo” and “Too Precious” dance out of the speakers with whipsmart lyricisms and a sophisticated alt-pop twirl, showcasing a spectrum reach that most artists spend years trying to capture. Earworms abound.

“I am so excited for Egg in the Backseat to be released into the world,” says Beihold (pronounced bye-hold). “I had the most fun making this EP with my collaborators Dallas Caton, Alex Veltri, Michael Coleman and James Ghaleb, and I feel it comes through in the music. If you liked ‘Numb Little Bug,’ be prepared for some more blunt, sunny pop.”

Yeah we like that one, too. In fact, our sorely sagging Best of 2022 lists just got a necessary jolt, and one we’ll be vibing to through the changing of the seasons. Now we just gotta tell a friend.
