Listening to Boy Harsher’s new wave sparkler “Autonomy” always makes us want to escape out to the middle of nowhere and shower ourselves in exquisite confidence we always lack when trapped in society. It instantly felt like one of the defining tracks of 2022, and now the standout jam from the Western Massachusetts duo’s soundtrack to their own short horror story The Runner, with guest vocals here from Cooper B. Handy a.k.a. Lucy, gets its own music video. And naturally, it was self-directed by Boy Harsher with choreographed dance clips weaved in with the film’s scenes.
“’Autonomy’ is a product of pandemic isolation,” says Boy Harsher producer Augustus Muller. “I was feeling lost, lonely, and loveless. ‘Autonomy’ was my escape during a period where I truly felt stuck.”
Handy, a fellow Western Massachusetts artist, adds: “The songwriting process was very easy and breezy — it came together kind of magically. It was awesome to be able to collaborate and have this song with both Jae [Matthews] and I singing.”
After a successful run of screenings for The Runner, Boy Harsher are now headed out on an extended tour that kicks off next week in Philadelphia, with a local send-off show March 30 at the Somerville Theatre’s Crystal Ballroom.
