It’s always exciting to discover a new artist who just has it — and that it can be defined however you like. This seems to be the case for Nuha Ruby Ra, the East London avant-punk artist who this week dropped a captivating new single called “My Voice.” Both haunting and alluring as its thumping heartbeat crawls along the provocative underbelly of the soul, “My Voice” is the follow-up to her 2021 debut EP How To Move. If that record taught us how, this new joint delivers the dark promise of expectation.
“‘My Voice’ is post-How To Move, pre-everything else I’ll do; I’m in the waiting room,” says Ra. “I’m exploring what I can do. I play all the instruments and build surreal sonic architecture that’ll make you move differently. There’s a rave in the bat cave. Don’t be fooled by the beginning, the middle or the end.”
There’s no fooling when it comes to this type of enchantment, as the story feels less linear and more of a nebulous aura. Watch the Lynchian dream-canvas video for “My Voice” below, and catch Nuha Ruby Ra at SXSW later this month before she’s literally everywhere.
