BOSTON — First Night Boston today announced its full schedule of performances for New Year’s Eve, which will fill Copley Square and surrounding venues in the hours leading up to 2019. Comedians, artists, and musicians from near and far will perform across six performance venues in Boston’s Back Bay, with the stage, lights, and ice in Copley Square serving as the event’s centerpiece.
Beginning at noon on December 31, artistic and musical performances kick-off inside Boston Public Library and within the Copley Mall, and at 12:30, Boston-based Sweet Harmony turns heads from the main stage in Copley Square. Trinity Church hosts a performance by the Handel and Haydn Society at 1 p.m., and both the Old South Church and the Church of Christian Science host soul-warming organ concerts at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Musicians entertain from the main stage in Copley Square through the afternoon, while comedy performances and a myriad of family-friendly activities fill the Boston Public Library until 4:30 p.m. Event sponsor AT&T complements its free hot chocolate bar with a trio of guitarists at 5:00 p.m. from its Boylston Street store.
Following remarks from the Mayor of Boston and the People’s Procession at 6 p.m., fireworks fill the sky above Boston Common, and music returns to the main stage in Copley Square, where the tempo increases amid sparkling ice sculptures and illuminated buildings.
Boston-based hip-hop duo STL GLD kicks their rhymes at 7:45 p.m., followed by the fearless quartet of female rockers Flight of Fire. With her powerful voice echoing around Copley Square, American Idol contender Sonika Vaid returns to her Boston roots at 9 p.m.
As the countdown clocks inch closer, spirits remain high as Ménage, a brother-sister punk/pop duo from Toronto plugs in at 9:30 p.m., before the United Kingdom’s pop quartet Single by Sunday drops a beat. Event headliner Chadwick Stokes and the Pintos take the stage around 11:20 p.m., and help New England ring in 2019, playing past midnight in Copley Square.
The performance by Stokes, who also has served as the front man for State Radio and Dispatch, will highlight more than twelve hours of entertainment, light shows, ice sculptures, and other family-friendly programming that is completely free for thousands of visitors.
More than 200,000 guests are expected to visit First Night Boston. Donations can be made to help support the event at the event website, www.firstnightboston.org.
