Never mind the influx of Best of 2018 lists about to bombard us in a month or so; we’re ready to name the finest album of 2019. Ok, ok, well, that’s a bit of a stretch, but we can forecast one of our most anticipated albums of next year based on a pair of tracks from an artist we’re going to be hearing a lot from: This new one is called “Flirting With Her” and it’s from Sir Babygirl and holy shit it making us move in awkwardly beautiful ways.
“I was listening to a lot of Avril and Ashlee and wanted to take the structure of their anthemic songs and make it explicitly gay,” says Sir Babygirl, who turns up the noise after unleashing an XCX-ian alt-pop bounce in joyous summer single “Heels”. This new one, she says, is “about every girl I’ve ever flirted with.”
As we get acclimated, were psyched to mention that Sir Babygirl has local roots: The pseudonymme of DIY pop diva/producer Kelsie Hogue, she was born in Silicon Valley but raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, studying Boston University’s School of Theater while toiling among the Allston underground in bands like Leigh Cheri. She did some time in Chicago’s DIY and comedy scene before returning home, converting her childhood bedroom into a makeshift studio.
What we’re getting out of those sessions is Crush On Me, Sir Babygirl’s debut album that’s set for February 15 release via Father/Daughter Records. It has forced us to look into the new year for the very first time. We can’t wait.
