We’ve been in a ’90s kinda mood this summer, and it’s probably due to nostalgia for the Last Great Decade and a time that wasn’t just an absolute shitbath each and every day. Having a ’90s-coded soundtrack certainly doesn’t discourage our hypercolored daydreams, and now Forest is here to drop a dose of angsty longing against a backdrop of glitchy electronic alt-rock textures. The Los Angeles artist dropped throbbing new single “Divine Machine” this week, another sonic preview of the forthcoming Swan Dive album, due out September 25 via AWAL.
“Divine Machine” aches and purrs along a path of that inescapable type of spiritual bond we may share with another person, and we haven’t felt that way about anything since… well, you know.
“This song is about feeling tied to a person, and no matter what you do, you feel as if you’ll always be connected,” says Forest. “It deals with a very real feeling of not wanting a connection, but always feeling it in the back of your head. I love the idea of being bonded to someone spiritually, and I wanted to express that push and pull throughout the record. The chorus’ ‘I know that he’ll always be there waiting for me’ isn’t a physical statement, but intended to express how you can be waiting for something that might not ever come back.”
We certainly feel that.
