Well, that’s somewhat underwhelming. After all of this time — after four teasers shown in front of Avatar and countless other leaks and hints and whatever else — we’re kind of baffled by the choices in this Avengers: Doomsday trailer that Disney dropped on Monday while we were exploring the Negative Zone. Sure, RDJ’s Dr. Doom (or, going by Doctor Who rules, is it fully spelled out as “Doctor Doom?” Who knows, but we bet we’ll get emails about it) doesn’t seem terrible, but his big money shot — stopping Thor’s axe with his fingers — is, uh, kinda goofy.
Look, we don’t mean to yuck your yum if this is your shit (we’ll save that for the review if need be), but this feels like a Hail Mary that’s coming a bit too late. It’s not a Flutie moment. It’s a garbage time Chiefs touchdown when they’re getting their asses whipped by the Eagles. And, man, we do want this to be good. These big crossovers are goofy and exciting, and we all want it to be 2019 again. But it’s 2026, and we’re not too sure a bearded Chris Evans can do it for us anymore.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday:
“Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. See it in Infinity Vision, the way it’s meant to be seen, on bigger, brighter and more immersive screens.”
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, where you can see it in specially-branded Disney Faux-IMAX should you choose to check that out with the fam instead of Dune over the holidays.
