After a brief sojourn back into the comedy mines — someone out there apparently did watch both Ricky Stanicky and Balls Up — Peter Farrelly’s back at the surface, ready to breathe in that sweet middlebrow air once again. First came Green Book, then came The Greatest Beer Run Ever, now comes I Play Rocky, which will probably premiere at TIFF in a few weeks (you pretty much have a standing invite to debut your new films gala-style at the fest after winning the Audience Award). Yes, this is the Sly Stallone biopic. Yes, Anthony Ippolito, the kid playing Sly, looks and sounds the part. And, yes, we’re cautiously optimistic about this one.
Seriously, the only way we’d be frothing-at-the-mouth hyped about this movie is if it were about the making of Oscar, because we just want to know what the hell happened there. But it looks good enough for some Thanksgiving viewing with the extended family, at least from this trailer Amazon MGM dropped on Wednesday.
Take a look:
Here’s a synopsis for I Play Rocky — though, unless you think it’s about Ryan Gosling’s cute little alien pal in Project Hail Mary, you really probably don’t need one:
“The film is an electrifying true story about an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky—he was meant to be Rocky Balboa. Told “no” at every turn, Sylvester Stallone bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds. The result is the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie.”
I Play Rocky hits select theaters on November 6 before expanding nationwide on November 20.
