We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Andy Weir writes very solid and fun genre fiction, and we cannot wait to see Project Hail Mary when it hits theaters in the spring. After all, this is basically a dream-team project — a good source material, a great pair of directors behind the camera (Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who should be working on Spider-Verse instead of bringing another book to the screen), a swell screenwriter (Drew Goddard), and a star with legitimate mega-wattage in Ryan Gosling.
Forget The Martian, this is the kind of shit that gets us nice and excited for the coming year. Amazon/MGM dropped a brand new trailer for the project on Tuesday (likely before you rush out this weekend to see Wicked: For Good in that “I’m Kenough” shirt that’s starting to fade), and it looks just as good as the first one did.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis for Project Hail Mary (check out the book, too — it’s a perfect holiday vacation read):
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
Project Hail Mary rockets into theaters on March 20. Shame they didn’t release it a month later to capitalize on, well, you know. That’s how 2001 made its money — on the backs of kids getting real high before they went to see it — but maybe that’s a Warner Bros. trademark.
