Quick, call your friends who are ambient, experimental, and/or noise musicians: there’s a new option for a “Horror Film to Praise/Complain About at the Function” besides one of Peter Strickland’s flicks (and frankly, it’s more Berberian Sound Studio than Flux Gourmet, though we love them both). Seriously, we’re fascinated to see how Bryn Chainey’s Rabbit Trap plays with the Albini-adjacent set, because it’s got a solid premise that can be approximated to “Man, isn’t the Welsh countryside kinda creepy?” More seriously, it’s about two musicians (including Dev Patel) who start to go bugnuts when one of them records a… unique sound. Then they figure out that the old saying “two’s company, three’s a crowd” isn’t exactly just fodder for sitcom names when a mysterious visitor shows up. Anyhow, this got some interesting responses out of Sundance, so we’re pretty interested in seeing how it plays out, especially after this trailer Magnolia/Magnet dropped on Thursday.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis for Rabbit Trap:
“Seeking new inspiration and a fresh start, married musicians Daphne (Rosy McEwan) and Darcy (Dev Patel) move to the Welsh countryside to finish their new record. While collecting audio samples, Darcy inadvertently creates a field recording of mysterious sound never before heard by human ears. The discovery renews Daphne’s creative energy, but as the echoes of her music bleed into the surrounding landscape, ancient and malevolent woodland forces are disturbed. One day, a stranger arrives on their doorstep. The couple initially embraces the stranger, who helps them navigate and understand their new environment, but Darcy grows suspicious of his obsession. As jealousy and paranoia infect the makeshift family, the line between reality and myth begins to blur.”
Rabbit Trap hits theaters on September 12. And whatever you do, don’t do the “Frankie Teardrop” challenge or whatever with the sounds in this trailer. Leave that to TikTokers.
