A sexually-charged A24 thriller about power dynamics? Yeah, that sounds controversial enough to make Sky Ferreira come out of hiding. The singer today (December 5) releases her new song “Leash,” a cloak of synth-pop velvet written for the new Nicole Kidman flick Babygirl, which hits theaters this Christmas. The followup to Ferreira’s 2022 single “Don’t Forget” recalls the brooding pop magnetism that first established her career in the early 2010s, when the projects Ghost and Night Time, My Time ruled Tumblr. “Leashed up and lucid as you fall apart on me / Spray of stars and bruises, evaporated mercury,” she sings on the third verse, like a page of poetry ripped from a private journal.
