Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: Slow Pulp at Paradise Rock Club
There’s a lot going on in the world of Slow Pulp. The Wisconsin-bred, Chicago-based indie rock band, who we’ve covered a bit here at Vanyaland, released a fantastic album last fall called Yard; are opened up The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie spring North American tour; and recently released a magical cover of Lifehouse’s millennium pop-rock mainstay “Hanging by a Moment.” Now the crew led by Emily Massey have their own headlining tour making its way across the country, and it plays Boston’s Paradise Rock Club on Sunday (November 10). We’re hoping to see the Lifehouse cover in the setlist, not gonna lie. “I feel like this song kind of lives somewhere in between alt-rock and pop music, which is something we’re all pretty drawn to as a group,” says guitarist Henry Stoehr. “We wanted to try to provide a new take on the song, while also highlighting how cool the original song is.”

Comedy: Chris Porter at Laugh Boston
Not to be confused with the guy who books The Town And The City Festival in Lowell, Chris Porter, the Kansas City-raised comedian, return to town this weekend for an appearance at Laugh Boston on Sunday (November 10). Mic’d Up serves it up: “Never having been one to really mince words, Chris Porter only keeps getting bolder in his approach, thus churning out potent jokes and punchlines at such a high frequency, that the amount of silence is only getting smaller with each new hour. We don’t really know where he pulls these observations and musings from, but we’re here for it, and perhaps for just a Sunday night in the Seaport, you could be too.”
CHRIS PORTER :: Sunday, November 10 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: 6 p.m., $25 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: The Boondock Saints at Alamo Drafthouse
Before Boston became Hollywood East, and before the age of streaming, lonely Bostonians looked to a beat-up DVD of The Boondock Saints to show friends and foes just what life in the gritty city was all about. Ok, well, kinda. But the 1999 vigilante action thriller film is back as celebrates its 25 anniversary with a flurry of screenings around the area, including a Sunday (November 10) showing at Alamo Drafthouse in the Seaport that features a pre-recorded Q&A with writer/director Troy Duffy. Here’s word: “Suddenly touched by the crime overrunning the streets of Boston, Irish twin brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus (Sean Flanery and Norman Reedus) embark on a journey to cleanse their city of evil with their own brand of vigilante justice straight from the Emerald Isle, one fueled by Catholic ritual and spiritual belief. As the bodies of notorious gangsters hit the floor, one after the other, the brothers become controversial folk heroes in their adoptive community. But eccentric FBI agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe) is closing in on them fast as the boys deliver vengeance from what many believe is the great and terrible right hand of God. Are they sinners or are they Saints? You decide.”
