Folks at Roadrunner last night felt charmed, we’re sure, after witnessing Clairo begin a trio of headlining performances at the Brighton venue.
The Carlisle alt-pop artist (born Claire Cottrill) is currently cruising through a year that’s seen the release of her third LP Charm, a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and multiple Boston Music Award nominations, including a coveted nod for “Artist of the Year.” Her triplet of appearances at Roadrunner is another feather in her already-crowded cap as one of Massachusetts’ breakout acts in recent years, extending a domain in the alt-pop sphere first staked out by the dreamy, lo-fi goodness of “Flaming Hot Cheetos.”
Charm presents a departure from the futuristic sound that first ensnared our ears (think: diary 001), but it gleams with Clairo’s soft-spoken candor nonetheless, summoning a 1970s-inspired sonic palette to deliver lounge-ready cuts like “Terrapin” and “Juna.”
If it were any other artist, we’d argue that Charm‘s ambiance would be better served in a more intimate venue. But when it comes to homegrown talent ascending to new levels of recognition, we say: Bring on the bigger stages.
