Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: The Heavy Heavy at Brighton Music Hall
After throwing it down heavy heavy at Boston Calling in a spring, a performance that turned lots of heads and swayed even more shoulders, The Heavy Heavy have now set out on a fall stateside club tour dubbed One of a Kind US Tour ’24. And that’s music to our ears, as the British retro-inspired rock band delivered pure heat in its festival set, including dropping a surprising cover of a Father John Misty classic. But as we caught the duo out in the field and under the sun, we couldn’t help but wonder what kind of energy they’d pack into an enclosed and intimate venue, and now we’ll find out as The Heavy Heavy play Allston’s Brighton Music Hall on Sunday (September 29). It arries a few weeks after they dropped debut album One of a Kind. “This has been in the making for years and it feels incredible to release it into the world,” the band declares on Insta. “In the wise words of someone close to us, this is just the beginning… we’re glad to have you on the journey with us.” Recent single “Happiness” sets the mood for the weekend.

Comedy: Anthony DeVito at The Comedy Studio
Look, we’re not gonna say the New Jersey Devils are going to win the Stanley Cup this year, but it’s a little odd that a few days before the Devils kick off the 2024-2025 NHL season in Prague against the hapless Buffalo Sabres, Anthony DeVito brings his Jersey Boy show to the area for an appearance this Sunday (September 29). Just sayin’. Here’s Mic’d Up with the word: “Under a new name for his hit one-man show, Anthony DeVito returns to town, this time at the brand new Comedy Studio, to bring us up to speed on how the story has developed since his first offering. Sure to be a jaw-dropping adventure in a number of ways, DeVito continues to pour every ounce of his unbeatable storytelling abilities into a heavy story that pack quite a punch from start to finish.” #LGD.

Film/TV: The Mighty Ducks at Boston Landing
So clearly from the words above in the Comedy block, we have hockey on the brain. And for good reason, as puck drop is just around the corner! While Bruins fans roll their collective eyes at our unwavering Devils fandom here in enemy territory, we also have something for the home team: A free Saturday (September 28) screening of The Mighty Ducks at Boston Landing at the Warrior Ice Area, the practice facility of the Black & Gold. It looks like a good time, with the classic 1992 film, as well as a host of other amenties: DJ sets from Chris Roxx, a Broken Records pop-up bar, an American Flatbread pizze pop-up, free movie concessions, and some contests and giveaways. Quack, quack!
