When the world’s vibrant color acts to only blind us from reality, Cigarettes After Sex’s grayscale brand of alternative dream-pop is here to place things into a clearer perspective. The Texas-born project led by Greg Gonzalez unveiled new album X’s in July, and now finds itself routed back to Boston for a world tour that slow burns tonight (September 4) at TD Garden.
Back in April, we were treated to an atmospheric new single called “Dark Vacay,” and it takes us with Gonzalez as he travels the world, experiencing joy and excitement as a tourist while also being a stranger in a doomed relationship, the two feelings rising to a busy surface in an intangled unison.
“This song is about a romance I had a few years ago,” Gonzalez says. “We went on tour together & were lucky enough to go to all these wonderful places, mostly having fun at first. As the tour continued though, everything started falling apart & we ended up breaking up by the end of it. I was left wishing that we were somehow able to see all of the beauty around us before it was too late…”
At some point we all realize that most of our X’s can be found in Boston; today or any other day on the calendar.
