Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: Punk In Drublic Festival in Brockton
Peace out, NoFX. The influential West Coast band is out on a farewell run this summer after 40 years in the punk rock trenches, and bring the Punk In Drublic Festival into Brockton’s Campanelli Stadium this weekend (August 31 and September 1) for its final New England appearances. And the lineup is solid, with Saturday’s slate featuring Circle Jerks, Bouncing Souls, Street Dogs, and others; while Sunday draws Dropkick Murphys, Lagwagon, Catbite, and more. Brockton Mayor Robert F. Sullivan is also on board, presenting the band with a proclamation before Sunday’s headlining set: “NoFX has a long history in New England and has influenced countless musicians, skaters and artists in Brockton and the region for four decades. It’s only fitting they come full circle — 21 years after their last Brockton show — and conclude their incredible run here in the City of Champions. Congrats to NoFX on an amazing career and good luck on your final tour.”

Music: Sean Patton at Crystal Ballroom
If there was a list of comedians we’ve covered the most over the past several years here at Vanyaland, Sean Patton would be near the top of the list. And even though the reliable funnyman is based in New York City by way of New Orleans, he weirdly feels like a local to us, the type of dude you grew up with in Billerica or Bridgewater. Patton is back in town this weekend for another twirl at Crystal Ballroom, and Mic’d Up sets it up and knocks it down: “A little bit of that NOLA charm never hurt anyone, and having Sean Patton back in town is always a treat. One of the most acclaimed storytellers and joke writers on the grind today, Patton keeps bringing the good good to the masses, and as long as he’s up for that, we’re up for a throwdown with one of the best in the game.”
SEAN PATTON :: Saturday, August 31 at Crystal Ballroom, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA : 6 p.m., all ages, $25 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: ‘Cruel Intentions’ at Somerville Theatre
A while back we were watching some TV countdown show listing the Top 10 soundtracks of the ’90s, and we were very upset that Cruel Intentions was not recognized. The OST from the 1999 guilty pleasure teen movie with a slutty cast (Sarah Michelle Gellar! Ryan Phillippe! Reese Witherspoon! Selma Blair!) had the alt-rock j-a-m-s to back it up, from The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” in the climactic scene (sniff) to contributions from Blur, Aimee Mann, Counting Crows, and others. But who could fucking forget the iconic opening shots of Phillippe’s Sebastian just cruising down a New York City highway on his way to therapy as Placebo’s still-unfuckwithable “Every You Every Me” cranked overhead. Got-damn, that intro alone should have won all the Oscars. We’re worked up just thinking about it. Anyway, Cruel Intentions is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year (“you amaze me,” march of time) and it’s showing at The Somerville Theatre tonight (August 30) as part of an IFFBoston Hot Summer Nights series double feature with Wild Things. And our very own senior writer Michael Christopher introduces both before DJing the official afterparty Saturday night at Crystal Ballroom. Ask him to spin Placebo.
‘CRUEL INTENTIONS’ :: Friday, August 30 at The Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA :: 7 p.m., $12 to $18 :: Event info and tickets
