todays4cast aspires to create from past ‘Ashes’ on serene new EP

The opening track of Ashes, the new project from todays4cast, has a lumbering quality to it. Titled “One More Time,” the song seems to mosey through instrumental hip-hop, simulating a dogged march. “For only 7 songs, this was a hard record to make,” the Boston producer reflects on Instagram. And when you remember that the EP was originally due out earlier this summer, the encumbered pacing suddenly feels like an wordless metaphor for the creative process.

But the new offering from todays4cast is serene, if not slightly stubborn in its beats-based momentum. “Intersection” wanders into late nite lo-fi territory, “Acceptance” whirls through low-key drum and guitar instrumentals, and “It Was All A Dream” closes the project with a satisfying slip into drowsiness.

“Growth, unfortunately, isn’t linear,” todays4cast elaborated in the aforementioned Instagram post, explaining the EP’s title. “Things can burn in the process. Sometimes at the expense of something that, perhaps, should have been watered instead. Gather up the ASHES and mix them into the fertilizer. Use water instead of fire and watch the garden that you watched die, become a thriving ecosystem where everyone can flourish.”
