Feel Soderbergh’s ‘Presence’ in this creepy teaser

It’s always cool when a well-established filmmaker rolls back into the fest that made them famous and stuns with something a good 35 years later. That’s what happened when Steven Soderbergh premiered Presence at this year’s Sundance – a ghost story that’s unlike anything you’ve seen in recent years. We were on-hand to check it out, and it’s a real good time. It’s just a bummer that you’ll have to wait so long to see it – almost a full year after the premiere – but at least Neon dropped a very sparse and wonderfully creepy trailer for the movie to tide you over on Wednesday (August 7).

It hints at the conceit very well without… spoiling too much, and now we feel kind of bad for talking about it how we did in our (rave) review. Oh well.

Peep it:

Spooky! Anyhow, know what rocks? The Neon-provided synopsis here is included in this blurb from the Sundance program, so you get some added color as well as the “mystery” or whatever:

“A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.

In every project of his legendary career as a director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, and editor, Steven Soderbergh has brought a vital energy, curiosity, and unique vision to storytelling that has few parallels in filmmaking history. Following groundbreaking work like ‘sex, lies, and videotape’ (1989 Sundance Film Festival, Audience Award: Dramatic) and ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ (2009 Sundance Film Festival), he returns to Park City with a film shot entirely in one location that will haunt audiences with its otherworldly story and constantly awe-inspiring visuals. Working from a taut, mysterious script by David Koepp and featuring an exciting cast of known actors and newcomers, ‘Presence’ is a thrilling cinematic ride that reifies Soderbergh’s status as an icon of American independent film.”

Presence hits theaters on January 19.
