Kim Deal abandons plans for the good times with the jangly ‘Coast’

Kim Deal has released a new single today (July 15) via 4AD called “Coast,” and it has a few notable aspects behind it that appeal to audiences both here in New England and beyond.

The chilled-out, jangly pop-rock effort from the former Pixies bassist has seeds that extend back to 2000, when Deal was staying on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket (“Oh all hold up / And abandon plans for the good times / Where forgotten roads take lost lives / To beautiful kids on the coast), before it was fleshed out and written 20 years later after seeing a band called The Grape Whizzers performing Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” at her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding (now that’s a sentence!).

“Coast” was recorded by Steve Albini (RIP) at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, with Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez composing the song’s rhythm section, while Kim’s sister Kelley Deal plays guitar and Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza provides the horns.

Now usually we tuck in to these articles a quote from the artist describing the song in his, her, or their own words, but hell, that detail we just rolled out feels like enough for the reader to just go hit play.
