V3 Weekend: Third Eye Blind, Corey Rodrigues, ‘Jaws’

Via New England Aquarium

Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of MusicComedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.

Music: Third Eye Blind at the Xfinity Center

Now a word from senior writer Michael Christopher: The ever-irascible Stephan Jenkins brings his Third Eye Blind crew to town for yet another “Summer Gods” tour Saturday night (July 13) at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield. It seems like every year or so the band, whose biggest hit was about oral sex and doing bumps of crystal meth, comes through to fill the sheds and remind everyone just how many anthems they were responsible for from the late-’90s onwards. And if you don’t remember, Jenkins will surely remind you, while remaining steadfast, that 3EB are indie rock at the end of the day. Wait, what? “We really are an indie rock band – we always have been,” the frontman told us during a 617 Q&A last year. “And we are kind of camouflaged by radio hits, but it doesn’t mean that there isn’t this other kind of energy and this other kind of life that’s really core to who we are. It’s just not one that the casual eye sees.” Either it kind of makes sense or Jenkins is guileful enough to be able to sell wishes back to a genie and then walk away with the magic lamp. Decide for yourself Saturday and as bonus get the pop punk of Yellowcard, who are having some sort of weird renaissance themselves these days.

THIRD EYE BLIND + YELLOWCARD + ARIZONA :: Saturday, July 13 at Xfinity Center, 885 S. Main St., in Mansfield MA :: 6:30 p.m., all ages, $35 to $143.75 :: Event info and tickets

Comedy: Corey Rodrigues at Laugh Boston

The summer doldrums mean nothing to Laugh Boston, which lines up quite a ha-ha weekend with Corey Rodrigues tonight (July 12) and River Butcher on Saturday (July 13). Here’s comedy editor Jason Greenough with the word in Mic’d Up: “There’s nothing quite like a hometown headliner to kick off the weekend. Not to mention, Rodrigues continues to be one of the best coming out of the city as he bolsters his top-tier storytelling abilities night after night on stages both locally and abroad. The best thing about a night out to see Rodrigues is that you know what’s up — he’s flat out one of the best in the game, and there’s no sign of him stopping.”

COREY RODRIGUES :: Friday, July 12 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: 6 p.m., $33 :: Advance tickets

Film/TV: ‘Jaws’ at New England Aquarium’s Simons Theatre

It seemed like everywhere we looked over the long July 4 weekend, Jaws was playing in a theatre. And that’s pretty awesome. But news flash — sharks don’t care about holidays! So the Simons Theatre at the New England Aquarium keeps the waters warm with special Shark Week screenings of the 1975 cult classic tonight (July 12) and Saturday (July 13) on the giant 65-by-85-foot-wide screen at the Simons Theatre. We probably don’t need to oversell this outside the idea of seeing a really big fish on a really big screen, and that’s good enough for us — especially for those who entertained the idea of seeing the film somewhere over the holiday but instead got caught up in BBQs and block parties and all that other fun stuff.

‘JAWS’ :: Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13 at Simons Theatre at the New England Aquarium, 1 Central Wharf in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., $10 :: Event info
