Quick, what’s insatiably randy and links Albert Camus’ 1954 essay Summer to Pride 2024? We’ll spare you some Googling and divulge the answer; it’s the new Linnea’s Garden tune, “Chaotic Bisexual Summer.” Fusing the coming out story of Boston frontwoman Dr. Linnea Herzog with a stirring quote from Camus as means of inspiration, the band’s new single is a joyful dam burst of sensuality.
“Chaotic Bisexual Summer” reaches back to June 2014, when Herzog told her parents she was bisexual over email. Coming out to her folks wasn’t originally in the cards, but a new relationship with a woman prompted a change of plans. Her parents “took it as well as parents could,” she explains, but Herzog was ultimately ecstatic; she could finally pursue all forms of romance, openly and proudly. And while it’s easy to remember “Chaotic Bisexual Summer” for its lyrical sexcapades, the song speaks to the value of a life that’s unencumbered by fear and shame.
“My first girlfriend wasn’t my great love, but I am forever grateful for her because she’s the reason I came out,” Herzog explains. “This launched me on a new tale, where I don’t just follow the path of least resistance. It peeled back the layers of familial and societal expectations and gave me a glimpse of a life worth fighting for.”
