Smell what the ‘Moana 2’ trailer is cooking

Moana 2
Disney

We missed writing about Moana 2 back when it was stealth-announced at a Disney investor call, but, man, what a funny set of circumstances which led to this tentpole’s positioning in November. This was originally a Disney+ series until someone remembered just how much money the first Moana made, and that Auli’i Cravalho and The Rock are bankable stars. It’s just one of the most incredible things about this current post-Streaming era: Hollywood giants are quite literally having to relearn the basics of drawing a crowd after letting a number of potentially profitable flicks (Hocus Pocus 2, anyone?) die on the vine, covered by a firm layer of streamer-friendly weeds. Anyway, Disney dropped a pleasant trailer for the film very early on Wednesday morning, and it looks like a good time for the entire family. Yeah, we think the first one was pretty solid kids’ fare. Sue us.

Take a look (and yes, we used the embed from the Walt Disney Studios Canada YouTube account because it’s just funnier that way):

Here’s your official synopsis, which is as short as you’d expect when a movie like this is capable of selling itself:

“After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27. We sincerely hope that The Rock is still playing up his heel WWE persona — a run which began in earnest when he and management fucked around and found their way into a great WrestleMania storyline earlier this year — and does a bunch of hilarious press interviews in which he just rags on film journalists. To be fair, it’s what the industry as a whole deserves, and we’ll gladly take our People’s Elbow when the time comes.
