This Show Is Tonight: Julia Holter moves a room in Allston

It has been an exciting year, so far, for Julia Holter. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter, record producer, composer, artist, and academic in March released new album Something in the Room She Movesout via Domino, and word of it first arrived alongside a hypnotic single called “Spinning” and news of a spring tour that finally arrives tonight (May 15) at Brighton Music Hall in Allston.

“There’s a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies,” Holter says of the new record, its title inspired in part by The Beatles song “Something” (and in particular its lyrics, “something in the way she moves”). “I was trying to create a world that’s fluid-sounding, waterlike, evoking the body’s internal sound world.”

That tone is set with “Spinning,” and its video, co-directed by Holter and Nicola Giraffe. “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: Being in that moment, and what is that moment?”

We’ll find out soon enough. Watch “Spinning” below.
