Here’s your first look at James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

Ever since James Gunn took the reins at DC and announced that he’d be the lead-off cinematic batter for the new franchise, writing and directing a brand-new Superman film, we’ve naturally been curious about what exactly this would look like. Is David Corenswet, our new Man of Steel, going to get gussied up in bright colors like Christopher Reeve? Muted and dark like Henry Cavill’s? Gaudy and weird like Dean Cain? Or is he gonna just rock a t-shirt and jeans like Tom Welling did back in the Smallville days?

Well, it was only a matter of time before we got a first glimpse at the Corenswet in costume, given that Gunn and company started shooting a few months ago. After teasing the internet with a glimpse at his new Kingdom Come-styled emblem, Gunn took to Threads on Monday (and you better bet all five users of that site are fucking stoked) to drop a first-look image at the hero in tights and all.

Peep Truth, Justice, and the American Way made flesh:

You know what? We like it. The costume is interesting — he’d look dope without a cape, given that he’s basically wearing the same style of outfit that the Guardians of the Galaxy sported in Gunn’s last outing with Marvel — and as skeptical as we are of the pseudo-collar (Homelander sort of took the wind out of Jim Lee’s sails once The Boys made its way to Amazon), it’s well in line with the aesthetic that we imagined Gunn would shoot for. This dude, after all, did direct The Suicide Squad, which struck a nice blend between the campy and the practical.

More interesting is the pose that Gunn chose — he’s suiting up in something other than a phone booth and doing so in a somewhat melancholic fashion. But not in the way that Snyder’s alienated Man of Steel was- this is more pensive and human than the “Gods Among Us” thematics. Is this gonna be a Superman movie that actually gives a shit about Clark Kent instead of Kal-El? Who knows.

All we know is that we’re hyped as fuck for Superman — once titled Superman: Legacy in case you need to be reminded — to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
