Leanah crashes into a cycle of ‘Karma’ on new single

When dishing out disses and breakup songs, it’s all fun and games until you’re the one owning up to the wreckage. Lucky for Leanah, poised R&B helps imperfect lovers cope like champs. The Boston artist accepts partial blame for a now-dissolved relationship on “Karma,” her new single from earlier this month (April 13) and the followup to her debut single “Running Back.”

“I’ve written a couple songs about heartbreak, but ‘Karma’s story goes more into depth on my side of imperfections,” Leanah says. “There are two sides to every story, and I wanted to include a song in this era of mine that doesn’t show me as the victim, but rather dives into my part in the demise of a relationship.”

Amidst a swirl of karmic consequences on the track, Leanah plainly levels with her flaws in search of healing, crooning “Patch me up / I’ve had enough.” While locked in a self-reflective state, her viewpoint on “Karma” never becomes barbed or defensive. Instead, the aftermath of the breakup washes over her, cleansing her mind and heart in the process — so much so, that Leanah likens writing “Karma” to therapy.

“It was a way for me to force myself to come to a realization that would finally lead to acceptance — I’m not perfect, no one is, and all things come full circle,” she shares with Vanyaland. “Once I could accept that, I could accept new beginnings rather than holding on to the past.”
