Low Hum reverberates with an introspective note to self on ‘Hints’

Low Hum is not ready to reveal all of his secrets, but he’s given us “Hints.” Literally, it’s the title of the latest single out today (March 29) via Last Gang Records; thematically, it’s just a hint sneak peek into his upcoming album, Terra Incognita, due May 24.

The Hawaii-born and Los Angeles-based musician, known off-stage as Collin Desha, opens “Hints” with subtle ambient noise — almost like the fuzz of a record player spinning, but the artist explains that it’s a result of the recording process: “The song was written up in the mountains and you can hear the rain at the beginning of the song hitting the house.”

Desha enters the track vocally, closely followed by fragile chords and subtle vocal harmonies. And that, sonically, is the central crux of the song — save for a healthy dose of beautiful flourishes and fuzzy guitar. If “Hints” sounds like an introspective note to self, Desha did that deliberately.

“This is an open letter/diary of shifting feelings that I was going through,” he adds. “The central idea being everything you need is here in front of you, as long as you can see it.”

Low Hum will be in town May 3 supporting Ra Ra Riot at Royale, just in time to get Bostonians excited for Terra Incognita. Check out “Hints” in the meantime.
