What’s the deal with Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Unfrosted’ trailer?

Two thoughts: First, have we entered a true-blue era of junk-food cinema? Like, not in the sense that your average try-hard glasses-wearer (you know the type, the kind of motherfucker who brings a Gose to a party where people are drinking some Mad Dog) would say about superhero movies and sequels — we mean literal junk food. Between Flamin’ Hot and now the Pop Tarts-origin-story Unfrosted, it looks like we’ll get a movie about the origins of Fruit-by-the-Foot at TIFF.

Second, a new “creative” project from Jerry Seinfeld is definitely a movie to look out for. Will it be any good? Who knows. People hated Bee Movie when that came out, but by the time the target audience — children — hit the dorms for their freshman years, it had become a ridiculous part of meme culture online. This project, which Seinfeld directed, wrote, and stars in, is about as far away as you can get from an animated flick about honeybees and their honeys, because nothing screams “audience interest” like a battle between Post and General Mills.

The film’s been in the oven since 2022, and it’s finally gonna make its way to Netflix in just over a month, so the streamer finally dropped a trailer for it. You be the judge. Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis:

“‘Unfrosted’ takes place in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1963, where the two notorious cereal rivals are looking for a way to revolutionize how consumers start their day. After years of bland breakfasts, Kellogg’s and Post peruse the world of pastries for their next big thing. What follows is a war that gets explosive, sometimes literally, as corporate ambition runs wild, betrayal runs rampant, and menacing milkmen enter the fray. Through plenty of research and experimentation with artificial ingredients, the team at Kellogg’s hopes to win the race with dessert for breakfast, even as the company navigates its own internal chaos.”

Unfrosted will be served up to Netflix subscribers unpackaged, toasted, and hot on May 3.
