When people see themselves up on the Jumbotron, they usually respond by dancing. And now hearing “Jumbotron”, the seductive new synth-pop single from Set Feux, should inspire the same kind of impassioned reaction.
Released this past Friday (March 1), the latest from Toronto musician Diana Planche is an escapist fantasy, a slow-burning twirl under neon lights and atmospheric ambition, and callbacks to the usual retro-pop styling points all apply here in spades. But there’s a tension building under the glossy surface, and this new single feels like a portal into a larger world; “Jumbotron” will be featured on Set Feax’s forthcoming self-titled debut album, set for an April 19 drop.
“I was exploring the tension between two ideas in this song,” Planche says. “One idea is the desire to be seen by others, flaws and all and to unapologetically share one’s authentic self with the world. The other idea is a critique of trying to live up to the impossible conventional beauty standards and the pressure to manufacture the perfect image of yourself. I wrestle with this dichotomy myself and writing about it was an attempt to work through some of it.”
