Editor’s Note: The shot clock has been reset and we’re in the early innings of a brand new year. However, we all know just how grey and cold the winter months can feel once the holidays wrap up, so comedy is continuing to do the Lord’s work by giving us something to smile (or groan, wince, or gasp) at. With homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlighting the calendar, the plethora of powerful comedy throughout the commonwealth continues to show up, night after night. Enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below, find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (February 25).
Comic vs. Comic at Laugh Boston
The honor of Comic vs. Comic’s “maestro” may have been passed on from Sean Sullivan, but new host Logan O’Brien is keeping the spirit alive as he presents an all-new lineup of hard-hitting roast showdowns. It’s all in jest (at least on the surface), but there are very few things as untethered as a roast battle, so any burn is a sweet one at the end of the day.
COMIC VS. COMIC :: Wednesday, February 21 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., $25 :: Advance tickets
Ms. Pat at The Wilbur
If Ms. Pat is saying it, you know it’s worth listening to. Never one to mince words or sugarcoat the uncomfortable truths, Pat is bringing a whole new offering of comedy goodness back to The Wilbur stage that will surely seek to get you doubled over in laughter without holding anything back.
MS. PAT :: Friday, February 23 at The Wilbur, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 6 p.m., $35 to $40 :: Advance tickets
Patton Oswalt at City Winery
The term “gatekeeper” comes with too many negative connotations these days to include it here, but at the very least, Patton Oswalt continues to be a leading torch-bearer for comedy, and this weekend will give you a fresh and updated reason as to why. With so many comedians achieving bigger crowds every year, Oswalt continues to bring an arena-level energy and creative precision to even the most intimate crowds, while making even the most juvenile dick joke sound poetic.
PATTON OSWALT :: Friday, February 23 at City Winery, 80 Beverly St. in Boston, MA :: 6 and 8:45 p.m., $65 to $75 :: Advance tickets
Liza Treyger at Crystal Ballroom
If the fact that she has an entire podcast devoted to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit doesn’t make you love the creative force of Liza Treyger right off the bat, then her stand-up will absolutely do the trick. Meshing a number of elements like observations and storytelling, Treyger executes both and more with a palpable enjoyment for sharing experiences of absurdity in her life, while maintaining the ability to connect with her audience on a highly relatable level.
LIZA TREYGER :: Friday, February 23 at Crystal Ballroom, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA :: 6:30 p.m., $33 :: Advance tickets
