Zola Simone issues a scarlet letter in new single and video ‘V.’

Screengrab

According to Zola Simone, “v” is for vendetta Valentine’s Day Villanelle. The Boston-raised artist issues her own kind of scarlet letter in the new release “V.,” marking the Killing Eve character with lyrical red flags like “Bring you to your knees / But she’s far from Jesus.” Released on Valentine’s Day (February 14), the nod to Killing Eve masquerades as an urgent warning about a well-dressed and well-practiced backstabber. “I often find inspiration from sources outside my own life and experience, and writing about such a complex and violent character intrigued me,” Simone tells Vanyaland. Her commitment to the character study bleeds through the tune’s hyper-realistic narrative, vibrant as the bruise she likens to Villanelle: “Stained across your skin / Purple, black, and blu-u-ue.” Tune in below.
