Julia Holter, May 15

It should be an exciting year ahead for Julia Holter. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter, record producer, composer, artist, and academic this week announced her new album, March’s Something in the Room She Moves, out via Domino, alongside a hypnotic single in “Spinning” and news of a spring tour that arrives at Brighton Music Hall in Allston on May 15. “There’s a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies,” Holter says of the new record, it’s title inspired in part by The Beatles song “Something” (and in particular its lyrics, “something in the way she moves”). “I was trying to create a world that’s fluid-sounding, waterlike, evoking the body’s internal sound world.” That tone is set with “Spinning,” and its video, co-directed by Holter and Nicola Giraffe. “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: Being in that moment, and what is that moment?” We’ll find out soon enough. Tickets go on sale Friday (January 12) at 10 a.m. local time.
